According to Google search engines, terms like ‘I hate being a lawyer’, ‘leaving law’, ‘how to make more money as a lawyer’, ‘legal marketing’, and ‘be a better lawyer’ are searched hundreds, if not thousands of times per month.
The volume of these kinds of searches affirms that there is a trend happening with lawyers—they want to do something to change their current situation and improve their life as a lawyer.
Perhaps you’ll relate with these situations shared by a few of our Personal Family Lawyers. (Lawyers trained and endorsed by NLBM; you can learn more about them here.)
“I was running a busy, highly transactional immigration law practice. I was burnt out and working 12-15 hour days.” – Stephanie S.
“I started my own practice from the beginning, taking any client who walked in the door - and that was not working. I ended up with a lot of clients that weren't aligned with the work I wanted to do. I was also bogged down by all these other things that aren't the actual lawyering, and felt more like I had just created a job for myself. I was tired, beginning to resent it, and I needed to get back to a place where I enjoyed my work.” – Amber S.
“My life as a lawyer was driven by conflict, deadlines, court schedules, an adversarial mentality where your opponent is constantly looking for you to slip up, miss something. I increasingly felt that I could not deliver good results to the clients because of so many factors beyond my control.” – Taylor H.
“I was burned out and thinking of leaving the law completely to become a life coach. I actually discovered NLBM when I searched ‘leaving the legal field’”. – Pam M.
These are just a few examples, but what we’ve noticed, after working with over 2,600 lawyers, is that the reasons lawyers are searching for some way to improve their lives and law practices often come down to three things: time, money, and fulfillment.
We’ve found that the very best place to start is to get abundantly clear on what it is that you really, really want.
Why is knowing what you do want such a critical first step? It’s simple.
You can’t get what you want until you know what you want. You cannot possibly make the best use of your time unless you are able to define your priorities and optimize your utilization of the resources you have available—and you won’t be truly fulfilled and happy until you do.
This free resource is The Money Map for Lawyers, an interactive, 5-module training that will help you map out a plan for your life and law practice that will allow you to meet your time, money, and personal goals.

Let’s take a quick peek at what happened with Stephanie, Amber, Taylor, and Pam when they found what they were searching for…
“My transition to estate planning with NLBM has enabled me to live my life again. I’ve increased my revenue by 1,000% and I’m spending 35-40 hours weekly on the practice. I'm a true community resource now - and what's best is that I can actually spend time with my family and on my hobbies.” – Stephanie S.
“Putting these systems in place has been really helpful. There is no need for me to reinvent the wheel, and I can focus my energy. I finally feel like I'm doing what I wanted to do when I started law school!” – Amber S.
“Thanks to NLBM, I assessed the aspects of my practice that bring me joy and allow me more freedom to dictate my own schedule, and I’ve found that working with the clients directly without an adversary gives me more freedom for myself, my family, and my clients.” – Taylor H.
“Now, I love my law firm and my law practice. My clients are wonderful to work with and super grateful. I feel like I am making a difference, and have better work-life balance. I feel confident and excited about what the future holds, which wouldn't have been possible without NLBM.” – Pam M.
