Welcome to the new law podcast for entrepreneurial lawyers, where you will learn to build your law practice into a business you love by being the most authentic, heart centered version of yourself. I'm Ali Katz, and in August of 2003, more than 20 years ago, knowing nothing at all about business, with two little kids at home and my husband as a stay at home dad and me as the breadwinner, I made the crazy choice to leave the security of my six figure paycheck and launch my own law practice. By 2006, I had built that practice into a million dollar a year business by learning everything I could about sales and marketing, and by inventing a new model for serving families with young children in my community. By 2009, I had written the bestselling book on legal planning for families wear clean underwear. And I was appearing on tv as a family financial and legal expert. And it was great. Except it was also terrible. Because even though I was earning more than a million dollars a year in my law practice, I was still constantly worried about money, wondering if one day it would all go poof.

And now I also had to learn how to lead a team to serve the clients coming into my practice. And I was woefully unequipped to do it. Well, it turns out the business of law was about far more than just sales and marketing or even a new service model. You've heard the saying, mo money, mo problems, right? Well, I learned that one firsthand. You see, success in business meant needing to master not just getting clients, but things like legal, insurance, financial and tax matters. Things you think I would have been good at as a graduate, first in my classroom law school, having worked on tax transactions for Warren Buffett, at one of the best law firms in the country, and leadership and learning to be the CEO of my own enterprise. But I didn't have any idea what any of that meant. Back then, as an associate at Munger, Tolls Nelson, I had worked on transactions for Warren Buffett, but I didn't think any of that applied to little old me.

And because I didn't know how to lead or which legal insurance financial tax systems I needed to apply in my own business, well, I thought I hated being a lawyer. But it turns out I didn't hate being a lawyer. I hated being a human. And I would need to learn to do the healing work that was necessary to resolve the deep inner conflicts that had likely led me to go to law school in the first place. But no one was teaching any of that back then, so I was on my own to figure it out. And I failed forward miserably, making nearly $5 million of mistakes along the way and walking away from everything I had created, filing bankruptcy, having a major spiritual crisis and awakening and then rebuilding all of it on a foundation of truth, integrity and love. That was more than ten years ago now, and since then I've discovered what it really takes to lead yourself into a life and law practice you love, serving clients you love, and being happier than you could ever imagine that you decided to go to law school in the first place. Today, I am the CEO and founder of New law, business model and personal family lawyer, serving millions of families across the United States with the heart centered, counseling based methodology for estate planning that turns lawyers into trusted advisors who can never be replaced by AI or cheap legal like insurance plans or DIY online websites.
